9 Signs of a Person Who Is Malicious and Ugly Inside (Never Trust These People)

Not every toxic person looks malicious.

Some hide behind a friendly smile, say all the right things, and know exactly how to gain your trust…until it’s too late.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve dealt with so many people like this that I can almost sense them the moment I meet them.

Based on both my personal and professional experience, here’s how to recognize someone who is toxic, dishonest, and malicious before they disturb your peace, waste your time, or betray you.

Why listen to me? I’m Sira Mas and I’m a relationship coach. I write about self-improvement, love, dating and psychology. My work has been featured on large publications such as Mamamia, Plenty of Fish, Ladders, Entrepreneur and Thrive Global.

1. They Talk Behind Their Best Friend’s Back

You can learn a lot about someone by listening to how they speak about the people closest to them.

If they call their “best friend” pathetic, crazy, or annoying behind their back, imagine what they say about you when you’re not around.

Maybe they mock that friend for still living with their parents because they can’t afford to move out yet. Instead of showing empathy, they use a vulnerable situation as gossip material.

People who behave this way have no real loyalty.

They may act loving and supportive face-to-face, but underneath that friendship, they’re judging, competing, and quietly betraying the person they claim to care about.

Real friendships are built on trust and protection. A good friend doesn’t go around talking behind your back, period.

So if the person in front of you can’t even respect the people they claim to love, you’re not an exception…and you’re just a placeholder until they find someone else to use.

2. They Manipulate Everything

These people rarely ask for what they want directly.

Instead, they twist the situation until you feel obligated to give it to them.

They’ll guilt-trip you, play the victim, or claim they’re “doing everything” while you’re actually the one making all the sacrifices.

If you’re dealing with someone like this, pay close attention to how they tell their stories.

Is everyone else always to blame? Do their words make you question your memory or judgment? Do they pressure you into doing or saying things you’re uncomfortable with?

That isn’t persuasion, but control.

They want power over your emotions, decisions, and perception of reality.

And once they realize their tactics work on you, they’ll repeat them until you feel confused, exhausted, and completely drained.

3. They Lie Compulsively

Whether it’s a “small” lie or something serious, if someone lies easily and repeatedly, run.

Dishonesty isn’t limited to the words coming out of their mouth. It also includes what they hide, distort, or conveniently forget to mention.

These people lie to escape accountability, get what they want, or protect the image they’ve created for themselves.

And here’s the truth: once someone shows you they’re comfortable lying to you, betraying you is usually the next step.

Someone who lies without guilt can hurt you without guilt, too. Never trust a person who treats the truth like something they can change whenever it suits them.

4. They Only Show Up When They Want Something From You

These are the users.

They aren’t in your life to build a genuine connection, care about you, or offer support. To them, you’re simply a source of whatever they need: attention, money, favors, emotional support, or a quick ego boost.

At first, they may seem incredibly warm and friendly.

But start saying “no” and notice how quickly their attitude changes.

In their eyes, you’re either useful or irrelevant. The moment you stop meeting their needs, they may disappear, guilt-trip you, or replace you as though you never mattered.

People like this will take until you have nothing left to give. Protect your energy and don’t let them drain you.

5. They Desperately Crave Attention (And Would Do Anything to Get It)

You know the type.

They’ll say or do almost anything to be noticed. They post fake, profound quotes online, exaggerate stories, play the victim, or create drama simply to provoke a reaction.

Their sense of worth depends entirely on other people’s attention. If they aren’t at the center of everything, they feel invisible and unimportant.

That makes them dangerous because they’re willing to betray anyone to stay in the spotlight.

They aren’t motivated by genuine love or loyalty. Ego and deep insecurity drive everything they do.

And if humiliating you or contributing to your downfall earns them more attention, they won’t hesitate for a second.

6. They Seem Charming at First…Until They Don’t Need to Be Charming With You

Based on my personal experience, this is the most dangerous kind. Because you don’t see it coming and you trust them when you shouldn’t.

(And you later regret it).

At first, they come off as charismatic, funny, confident. They’ll love-bomb you with compliments, act like they’re the only ones who really get you, and win everyone over.

But once they feel safe, or bored, that mask slips. Suddenly, they’re rude. Cold. Controlling.

They make snide comments. Dismiss your feelings. Push your boundaries.

You’ll be left wondering, “What happened?” What happened is: the real them showed up. And it’s not pretty.

The takeaway is really simple…and uncomfortable: If someone seems too perfect too quickly, watch what they do…not what they say.

The mask always cracks sooner or later.

7. They Enjoy Seeing Others Fail (Even If They Pretend They Don’t)

This one’s subtle, but toxic people secretly love when others mess up, because it makes them feel superior.

They might pretend to care, offer fake sympathy, or say “I told you so” in a sweet voice.

But pay attention to their eyes when someone else is struggling. They light up.

They live for comparison, and your pain is their little hit of dopamine. These people aren’t friends but secret competitors.

If someone smiles at your lowest, cut them off.

No second chances. That’s not just ugly, it’s evil.

8. They Have Zero Empathy (But They’re Great at Faking It)

These people are really good at pretending to care (when it’s convenient), but deep down, they don’t actually feel what others feel.

They might say “sorry” without meaning it, offer comfort that sounds robotic, or even cry on cue when it benefits them.

But when you really need them? They go cold.

You’ll notice they minimize your emotions, change the subject when you’re upset, or make everything about themselves.

Empathy is presence, care, and genuine concern (not just what someone tells you, anyone can learn a script by heart).

If it always feels fake, it probably is.

9. They Never Take Responsibility for Anything

The toxic, malicious person blames their ex. Their childhood. Their boss. Their horoscope. Anyone or anything but themselves.

If you call them out, they’ll deflect, attack, or play the victim.

They’ll say, “I was just joking,” “You’re so sensitive,” or “That’s not what I meant.”

You’ll find yourself constantly justifying your feelings, even when you know you’re right.

Here’s the truth: if someone never owns their behavior, they will never change.

You’ll always be the problem in their eyes, and they’ll gaslight you into believing it.

Accountability is a sign of maturity. And people who lack it? You can’t trust them with your peace.

Final Thoughts

People like this don’t walk around with warning signs on their foreheads, but their behavior always gives them away if you’re paying attention.

The sooner you recognize these red flags, the faster you can protect your peace, energy, and trust.

You don’t owe anyone access to your life just because they seem nice at first.

Trust what people show you, not what they tell you.

And remember: someone who’s ugly on the inside will always reveal it, you just have to stop making excuses for them when they do.
